Automatic Loading of CNC Machines
Better Machine Utilization and Fewer Production Stops
In modern CNC production, the performance of an individual machine is no longer the only important factor. What matters more and more is how much time the machine actually spends producing.
A large part of available production time is often lost during preparation, manual loading and unloading of workpieces, pallet changes or waiting for an operator. This is why automatic loading of CNC machines is becoming increasingly important, even in small-batch production and in environments with many different workpieces.
EROWA systems enable automated loading of workpieces, electrodes and pallets. They are suitable for different types of machines, including milling machines, lathes, grinding machines, measuring machines, and machines for sinker EDM or wire EDM.
Automation Is No Longer Only for Large Series
In the past, automation was often associated mainly with large-scale production. Today, the situation is different. In many companies, batch sizes are smaller, products change frequently, and requirements for accuracy remain high.
In this type of production, flexibility is essential. The system must support fast workpiece changes, reliable repeatability and good machine utilization. Automation is therefore no longer only a question of speed. It is increasingly connected with process stability, predictability and better organization of work.
With automatic loading, a CNC machine can also operate when the operator is not standing directly next to it. This enables better use of working time, fewer interruptions and higher machine availability.

Standardized Clamping as the Basis for Automation
Successful automation does not begin with the robot, but with a well-organized process. Standardized clamping, a repeatable zero point and a clearly defined flow of workpieces through production all play an important role.
When a workpiece is always prepared in the same way, the robot can reliably pick it up, transfer it and load it into the machine. This reduces the risk of errors during manual setup. At the same time, setup times are shortened and machining repeatability is improved.
EROWA solutions connect clamping systems, pallet systems, robots and production management software into a complete manufacturing concept. This approach means that automation does not have to be limited to a single machine. It can gradually develop into a connected production cell.
Modular Systems That Grow with Production
One of the key advantages of EROWA automation is modularity. A company can start with a simpler solution for loading one machine. Later, the system can be expanded with additional storage units, new machines, measuring equipment or software support for managing production tasks.
Compact robotic systems are suitable as a first step. They require little space and enable a gradual introduction of automation. These solutions are interesting for companies that want to start with automatic loading, but do not want to change the entire production process immediately.
For more demanding applications, larger robotic systems are available. They can serve several machines at the same time and connect different machining processes. For larger and heavier workpieces, stability, load capacity and repeatability are especially important.
The modular approach allows automation to develop together with production needs. A company can first improve the operation of one machine and later expand the system to several machines and a more connected production environment.
Hybrid Loading of Blanks and Pallets
In some applications, it is not enough for the robot to handle only pallets. The production process may also require automatic handling of blanks, part recognition and a combination of different loading methods.
Hybrid solutions are suitable for such applications, as they enable automatic handling of both pallets and blanks. This increases flexibility when producing different parts and smaller batches.
This way of working is especially useful in production environments where products change frequently. The robot can take over repetitive tasks that would otherwise have to be carried out manually by the operator. As a result, the process becomes more predictable, while the machine can operate with fewer interruptions.
Production Without Constant Operator Presence
One of the main goals of automatic loading is to increase machine availability. If workpieces, pallets and tools are properly prepared, the machine can also operate during extended shifts, at night or over the weekend.
This does not mean that the operator is no longer needed. Their role changes. Instead of constantly loading the machine manually, the operator can focus more on work preparation, process monitoring, measurements, production organization and solving more demanding tasks.
Automation therefore does not replace production knowledge. It helps to use it more effectively. Operators and programmers can spend more time on tasks that require experience, and less time on repetitive manual work.
Digital Management with EROWA JMS 4.0
When automation is expanded to several machines, production management software also becomes important. The robot alone is not enough. It is necessary to know which workpiece is ready, which program must be executed, which pallet is in use and what the status of each machine is.
This is where EROWA JMS 4.0 plays an important role. The system connects production tasks, machines, robots, clamping systems and measuring processes. It gives the user a better overview of production and makes it easier to plan machining operations.
Digital management is especially important in automated production with many different products. It helps reduce confusion during changeovers, improves traceability and enables better control of the entire process.
When Does Automatic Loading Pay Off?
Automatic loading of CNC machines pays off when the machine often waits for the operator. It also makes sense in production environments with excessive setup times or frequent workpiece changes.
It is important to look at the entire process. How much time does the machine actually spend machining? How much time is used for manual loading? How many setups, measurements and repeated clamping operations are required? Where do errors and delays occur?
The answers to these questions show whether automation makes sense. In many cases, automatic loading does not only increase the number of finished parts. It also improves process stability, work quality and production organization.
Trecon and EROWA Automation
At Trecon, we support customers in selecting, planning and implementing EROWA solutions for automatic loading of CNC machines. We do not look only at the robot, but at the entire production process.
The correct choice of clamping system, workpiece preparation, machine connection, safety concept and software support are all important. For existing CNC machines, we can also carry out the necessary adaptations for integration into an automated production cell.
Our goal is that automation should not simply mean adding equipment next to the machine. The solution must improve machine utilization, reduce production stops and create a basis for stable, transparent and flexible CNC production.
